God's Dilemma - Part 1

In the scheme of things God created everything and that made Him King of the Universe with anything He created becoming subservient to Him ... but it also automatically made Him alone and lonesome with no peer, friend, compatriot, confidante, family, adviser and many other things; not that He needed it, but the human part of Him needed someone to talk to, to confide in, to be friends with, to adore and love Him seriously and unconditionally. To be really one with Him.

Adam and Eve were most probably that and in their relationship there was most probably nothing of the master/slave issues. Neither He nor Adam and Eve had anything to loose, anything to pretend or anything to hide ... and everything to gain.

And ... His human side, which is His emotional side, also needed a friend, a wife, a child, a bride, a lover and many other things.

These roles or entities are not compatible with the Godhead, because they are in contrast with the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent character of the Godhead.

He is omnipotent to start with and His creatures are impotent in relation to Him, so to speak. He is a life giver and they are receivers of life. He has total authority and they have none. He owns everything they they own nothing.

In order to have communion with these creatures or allow these entities to have communion with Him, He had to conceal Himself, otherwise we would have been blown us away in the presence of His power, glory and righteousness.

Since my youth I had one overpowering desire which was to be a friend of God, after my granny taught me the beautiful song 'What a friend we have in Jesus'. It was easy then because I was nothing and had nothing, but with time I had become important and God unimportant and I also realized that I can never be a true friend of God.

Our Calvinistic upbringing also contributed to my fear of God, and fear drives love and friendship away.

Our view of Calvinism was that God was a policeman, writing up all our sins and transgressions to mete out the severest punishment He can think of at judgement day, for which He has prepared Hell. Our Christian creed also says 'God is in heaven and we are on earth, therefore our words should be few', which means 'shut up'. Needless to say, this is exactly the opposite of what God is or wants.

It took me decades to overcome this fear and inferiority to become a true friend of God as I am now, and I share my experience here for your benefit and elucidation. Apart from anything else,it is quite possible and normal for a child and his grand father to become the best of friends. There really is no restriction or impediment in true friendship.

Why do we think we cannot be friends of God?

The principle is lucidly set out in the philosophy of Satre regarding the relationship of a lover with the subject of his love. He wants to own his lover, but in the process the subject of his love becomes a slave, and he wants his lover to be free to love him or not to love him. He cannot own her and let her be free simultaneously.

So we think it is with God. But it is not.
