Life in the Afternoon - much more than a story of
soaring - and reflections of that on my life.

Part 8 - The Search begins
On having heard the testimony of a friend, who told me that God is working today as He worked two thousand years ago with signs and wonders, I had to do something. I would not allow myself to miss the opportunity or possibility of proving this if it was true, or rejecting it if it was false - and I would do it the scientific way, because my training was strictly scientific and technical, and I knew how to prove or disprove a scientific hypothesis.
This is the hypothesis - which I think is a simple one to
understand :
1. If God is real and all-knowing, then He
would have known in advance (before the birth of Christ) what would happen in
the New Testament.
2. If, what is written in the New Testament,
had been prophesied in the Old Testament, and the Old Testament had been
written before the birth and crucifixion of Christ, then there must be a God who
knew all these things beforehand and told us about them, and then the Old
Testament and the New Testament would be true and then Jesus Christ was for
real.
I set this hypothesis before God and made a compact with Him
on the following lines : If I can prove this hypothesis true, then I would
serve You.
That is it - short and sweet. It is the scientific way.
Any hypothesis can normally be proven on a 95% confidence
level - that is - nineteen cases complying with the hypothesis and one case not
complying with it. I realized that it presented five percent doubt, which I was
not satisfied with, being the sceptic that I am, because Mr. Doubt is known to
be a very elusive and pervasive enemy to beat. I wanted to downsize him to one
percent - a figure I could easily live with.
So I set out to study the scriptures, old parchments and
scrolls, history and everything else I could think of, or lay may hands on.
My main effort was directed at taking all the prophecies in
the Old Testament that could refer to Jesus Christ, study them, and compare
them with the history of the New Testament.
I am not going into everyone here, but I append a list of ninety
nine of these at the end of this Part for your self study. I think there might
be more than one thousand, if one really wants to make an in depth study, but
as I said, I was happy with ninety nine.
The end of the story is that I found over a hundred
prophecies in the Old Testament which were fulfilled in the New Testament -
almost to the jot and tittle, and I could not find one contradicting the Old
Testament, and by a process called induction, I have scientifically proved it
as being true on a confidence level far in excess of 99%.
The next step was to proof the authenticity of the Old
Testament as being older than the birth of Christ - containing the same text as
today's version, without having been tampered with.
This proof I found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, where they
found, for instance, a scroll of the book of Isaiah in 1948, as we have it
today, and have dated that to at least 500 BC. I was further astounded to learn
that it was almost word for word as we have it today. As most of the prophecies
of Jesus Christ comes from Isaiah, it was vital for me to establish that.
What was even more stunning, was that I found in the Old
Testament detail which was not in the New Testament.
There is a lot of speculation that the shroud of Jesus
Christ (in the film 'The Shroud') still exists today and that they have found
it and that they have tested for and found blood on it which could be that of
Jesus Christ - no doubt to make some money from religion as many people try to.
Had they but spent some time in Isaiah 9, they would have learned that the
garment was burned, and would not have dished up that hogwash for us. This is
not stated in the NT - only in the OT. Isa 9:5
For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and
garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel
of fire.
There is also no further information in the NT on what
happened to the family of Judas Iscariot, whilst in Psalm 109:13 it says that
his children became vagabonds and beggars, his posterior was cut off, and in
the next generation their names were blotted out.
Further, in the New Testament, Jesus Christ says that he was
created before the creation, but does not elaborate on it, whilst we can read
in Proverbs 8 how he was present during creation and in verse 31 how He played
with the sons of men on the habitable part of the earth.
There are many more, but the point I wish to make is that
when I want to see more detail of what happened in the New Testament, I go to
the prophecies of the Old Testament which are sometimes more elaborate and
accurate. Indeed an added bonus to my search, and a lifelong inspiration
confirming the authenticity of the Bible.
This whole process took me about six months to a year of
fervent study, and at the end of it, I told God that I was now ready to serve
Him - as per our compact.
There was however an aspect which I regarded as being an
important part of this Compact, and that was dedication and submission. I felt
that if I was to serve God, it would be essential that I would be doing it with
total dedication, and that I would surrender all I am, I own, I know, I do and
I think. It had to be total submission - not the type people tell you when they
ask you for a donation.
One of the obstacles was my fear of being sent to faraway places
like Indonesia to become a missionary. Although I knew that it was not very
likely, I had to prepare myself for this or any other eventuality, to say
without any doubt - Yes, I do. But, after some serious thought and meditation,
I was ready for even that.
And this I did in the first half of 1977.
One evening when we sang the last song, 'I surrender all',
in a Baptist Church, there was an altar call, and I think I was the first to
take it up. As I hurried down the aisle, I looked back and saw my wife
following me at speed.
I was naïve enough to think that a willful simple decision
was enough to accomplish all this, and I did not know that the battle would
only now start in all its intensity - and may I say splendour, because, with a
Field Marshall like Jesus Christ, the victories and fights were splendid
indeed.
Only now I realize that it was indeed a battle between God
and Satan for the possession of my soul, and that it was being waged on the
battlefield of my flesh, mind, soul and spirit - it would be Total War. The war
was basically a war against myself. Although in my spirit I had made a total
surrender, there were many parts of me who were ready to betray me and even
fight against me. There was my subconscious mind who would collude with the
enemy, my flesh who would resist control by my mind, and then there were the
normal enemies named Mr. Doubt, Mr. Morality, Mr. Legality, Mr. Self-Reproach,
Mr. Accusation and the Giant called Despair. I will introduce you later to some
of these gentlemen; or is it scoundrels?
Even today I fight against these gentlemen, who do not want
to toe the line, as I struggle to keep my ducks in a row, but it has become
much easier than those early conflicts.
At this stage I wish to refer you to the different phases of
the Holy Battle. First there was the battle for the saving of the lost souls of
the world (at Calvary), then there is the homecoming of all the detainees, prisoners-of-war
and vanquished - an event now happening - and then finally it will be a war
with Satan (Pharaoh) to let God's people go, after God has poured out the new Ten
Plaques (Seven seals and three Woes) onto this Earth.
The first mentioned battle is over - Christ has Risen - Hallelujah!!!
The first part of this beautiful gospel song explains it :
There's a line that's been drawn through
the ages,
On that line stands an old rugged cross;
On that cross a battle is raging,
For the gain of man's soul or his loss.
The earth shakes with the force of the
conflict,
For there hangs God's Son in the
balance,
And then through the darkness he cries:
"It is finished!" The
battle is over,
It is finished! There will be no more
war;
It is finished! The end of the conflict,
It is finished! And Jesus is Lord.
The homecoming of the detainees has not been completed -
each of us must return to our Home - which is in Jesus Christ. It can be
likened to the following story of people in the Second World war, who did not
know that the War was over :
During the Second World War, some of the Japanese who fought
in the Pacific Ocean Islands, did not hear the GOOD NEWS (Gospel) that the War
was over. They hid in caves where nobody could find them. Some of them stayed
in these caves for over twenty-five years, and the event of the last soldiers
who handed themselves over, was recorded in 1970. This is what is happening now
in the Christian World. The Battle is over, but we need to hand ourselves over
to the victor, Jesus Christ. This part of the gospel song tells us how :
Still in my heart the battle was raging,
Not all prisoners of war have come home;
There were battlefields of my own
making,
I did not know that the war has been
won.
Then I heard that the King of the Ages,
Had fought all the battles for me;
And that victory was mine for the
claiming,
And now praise His name I am free.
The last battle with Satan (still to come in the form of the
Great Tribulation and Armageddon) is about releasing God's children and His
nation from the earth - a planet belonging to Satan now, having swindled its
dominion from Adam and Eve six millennia ago. There will not be a war about the
dominion of the earth - God will not take what was 'rightfully' swindled. That
is the reason God will not fight for it - He will just give it its due penalty
for the unrighteousness of the millennia and the killing of the martyrs and the
spilling of the blood of righteous people - including the Blood of Jesus Christ.
Quo Vadis?
When I entered this fray, quite a few things started to
happen.
Firstly, I decided that the Church I was nominally a member
of, might not be the one I should serve God in, although I felt that I had an
obligation to go back to that Church to tell them the truth about the gospel -
that there was a personal God whom one could talk to.
I also started on a tour of all Churches that I could find,
to find out what they taught. It was Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal,
Protestant, Pentecostal Protestant Full Gospel, Apostolic Faith Mission and many
others I cannot even remember anymore.
But, the devil does not sleep when these things happen.
First thing I know, I get elected as a deacon in the DRC
Church, having gained some esteem in it, due to my sporadic visits and maybe
partially due to the fact that the Dominee was related to my mother. What now?
Shall I agree to appointment and live the lie? I decided that the best would be
to go and see him.
What he said, was basically that I could not go on the
leading and teaching of the Holy Spirit, as God would not favour me above other
Christians (in his Church), by giving me revelations and teachings that were
not in Scripture and which they could therefore not get. If that was so, then
God would be partisan to me, a thing his Church taught would be wrong of God to
do. The second thing he wanted me to realise, was that God was love, and that
it would not take something of me, like serving Him, to influence God in His
love or favour to me. I was like any other Christian, dependent on the Church
and its officers, to guide me to God, incidentally, a thing that Church was
unable to do for me in thirty years - or to any of my friends and family for
more years than that.
The second incident was not by my own instigation, as it
coincided with the monthly begging session of my deacon, who asked me for my
monthly contribution for a purpose I would never know. So he walked into the
lion's den, and I asked him some pertinent questions about Scripture. He
pleaded ignorant and promised to bring the Elder along next time.
It so happened that the Elder knew even less than he did.
When I asked him to please explain certain verses in the Bible to me, he
replied that he was not prepared to talk to me on the basis of Bible verses,
and that he was only prepared to talk to me on the basis of the 'Twenty
Articles' which were printed at the back of our Church Song Book. It then also
transpired that he did not really know what they actually meant, but that he
was adamant that those 'Twenty Articles' was to be the basis of my faith - and
his.
The 'Twenty Articles' he referred to, was a summary of the creed
of the 'First Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church' held in Nicaea in the
year 325 AD. It baffled me that our Church, which at that time regarded the
Pope as Antichrist, was so forward and happy to use his 'Twenty Articles' and
refused to use the Bible.
The third thing which happened in quick succession, was that
three of us who had by now discovered the truth, went to Bible study of that
Church one Wednesday evening - a study on the topic of the Baptism. Needless to
say, the whole Bible study class broke out in chaos, argument and physical
threats, before even five minutes had passed. I think it was the shortest Bible
study class I ever attended.
It became clear to me then, that it was time to move on -
but where to? I grew up in a typical Boere house, where our DRC Church, our
Volkskas Bank and our National Political Party reigned supreme and was the
emblems of our identity. It would be a difficult decision for me to break with
that culture and identity, even when none of them had ever been of any value to
me or my family and friends for as long as I can remember. It was rather
becoming an unbearable pack on my shoulders - much like my sin. It was however
not too difficult to break with them, as in a previous process I had to break
with the identity of my family, to become an engineer instead of a farmer.
And then the fourth thing happened. Five of us started
meeting weekly in our house, to sing and pray, and to seek God's direction in
our lives, to join a Church group where we might serve Him in Spirit and in
Truth, as Scripture says. It was normal for us to pray in turn for hours on
end.
But it was not all Sunday School stuff .... there were more
exciting spiritual experiences, of which talking to God, or at least listening
to Him, were the main events which I looked forward to. I desperately wanted to
strike up a conversation with God, after decades of only listening to what
people imagined He might be and He might like and He might say - an event
everybody thought was highly unlikely.
But then I tried it ...
After I surrendered all, I got the notion that I might start
to pay my tithes, not the salvation tip I gave the deacon monthly - so I asked
my friend where I should give this tithe, to which he replied : 'Ask God'.
That evening after I prayed, I asked God where I should give
my tithe, and the words 'Anderson Street' came into my mind. I thought that I
would, on my next trip to Johannesburg, walk down Anderson street, which I knew
existed there, and see whether there is not a religious type of organization
operating from somewhere in Anderson street. Yes, I was adamant on finding it,
even if I had to walk the whole street of a few kilometers. I also told my
friend of this name I got.
A few weeks later, we visited the Baptist Church in Pretoria
again. Just after we sat down for the service, my friend said that he noticed
when we arrived here at the Church today, that it was situated in Anderson
street - a fact we did not know beforehand. Well ... that leap of faith and
injection of inspiration, realizing that I could hear God talking, set me off
at a tangent. I did this exercise for over a year, and each time I got a name
and each time it turned out a blessing for all of us in the prayer group. This
experience later turned into many other incidents, and today I am used to His
voice.
You may read my testimony on striking up a conversation with
God here (it is written in three parts):
http://what-a-friend-an.blogspot.com/2011/07/striking-up-conversation-with-god-part.html
Soon after this a very interesting incident happened.
I was a dreamer since my youth, and always knew that it
meant nothing, being brought on, as my parents and friends used to say, by having
had too much meat for dinner. But I was a hostel hog and we never had any meat
for dinner.
Soon after my conversion I had a dream. I dreamed that my
electronic watch - the old ones that one had to press a button to see the
digital time - was not working. The next morning, sure as daylight, my watch
stopped working. I went to the shop and had a new battery fitted, and there it
was working again.
The next night I had exactly the same dream again. I thought
by myself, this cannot be, because I now have a new battery. The next morning -
sure as daylight - my watch broke down again, this time permanently. I immediately
knew that God wanted to talk to me in dreams and visions.
So I said to myself : Everything I hear from God by way of
dreams and visions, I need to attend to properly. I am going to take a book and
every morning, just after I wake up, I am going to write these dreams and
visions in a book, and see what happens, so that I might start to understand
them. This I did for many years and in many books, and I learned a lot. My
success rate with the interpretation of my dreams went up slowly from zero to
50% within the first five years. So much so, that I started to navigate my life
and decisions according to what was being revealed to me. Today, after more
than thirty years, my success rate has increased to more than 80%, and what is
more, I have started to get daytime visions, and God has started to talk to me
through myself. When I am awake, in an unguarded moment, I would say some strange
thing unexpectedly, which does not make sense and is mostly unthinkable, and
then suddenly I would wonder how I could say that, until I realised what was
going on. These lines that I repeated subconsciously was the last thing on my
mind. Even during the night when I was asleep, I would wake up and find God
talking to me through me loudly. My wife, who mostly heard this, would then
tell me what I said. We had been saved from ruin many times because of these
warnings which became urgent and serious at times.
There were also some disturbing aspects, which I did not
know how to deal with - and one of them was Divine Healing. Since my conversion
I knew Divine Healing was a reality, because God could do anything, and He did
it in the Old and New Testament, and I suddenly heard many testimonies of
people who were healed.
I attended some healing ministries by evangelists and other
believers, and then tried my luck at it. What I experienced shattered my faith
to no small degree - everybody, without exception, whom I prayed for, just got
more ill, and some even died - I do not hope, only, from hearing my prayer! The
reality of healing coupled with faith and the confession of sin, was the last
thing I could know of at that stage.
God would revisit this in my life decades later - He just could
not leave me with this unpleasant experience forever.
The second disturbing thing which I experienced, was that if
I did not 'grow in the spirit' every day, I started to fall back to my life of
sin and shame. Much like the down moving side of an escalator in a shopping
centre. I was climbing with my physical strength, towards the top, on an
escalator which was going down. I had to climb faster upwards, than the
escalator was going downwards. This called for a very strenuous exertion on my
part - but I was prepared for anything. The Bible says : Pro 27:7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to
the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
I knew I was on a very long road of discovery - of God - and
of myself - and I looked forward to this journey with anticipation and exhilaration.
Little did I know that it would not be moonlight and roses for many years, but
in the end the effort paid off.
Next time - Part 9 - Free
Will and defeating Mr. Legality.
